5 places not to miss on Rue Monge
Rue Monge is my heart. It was my stomping grounds for almost four years. It’s located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, i.e., postcard Paris, Hemingway’s Paris, bordering the Latin Quarter. If you’re in the area, be sure to pay these places a visit.
1. Strada Café
Strada Café is your quintessential hipster coffee shop. Expect delicious lattés, flat whites, bitterly-strong espressos, freshly squeezed juices, and a delicious brunch menu.
Address: 24 Rue Monge, 75005 Paris
2. Marché Monge
Marché Monge is the neighborhood's tri-weekly outdoor market. It’s home to a plethora of fresh fruits and veggies, mustards, cheeses, meats, fresh flowers, scarves and more. The market is every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. although sometimes vendors pack up sooner if foot traffic is slow.
Address: 1 Place Monge, 75005 Paris
Pharmacie Monge is a beast and a gold mine all in one. It’s full of your holy grail French beauty products like Bioderma, Avène, La Roche Posay, Nuxe, and many more. Consequently, it’s packed full of locals and tourists alike. Prices are cheaper here as Pharmacie Monge has teamed up with a few other local pharmacies so they can buy in bulk and offer competitive prices. They also have a sophisticated tax-free payment system for shoppers residing outside of the European Union and European Economic Area.
Address: 74 Rue Monge, 75005 Paris
Les Arènes de Lutèce is an ancient Roman amphitheater transformed into a sprawling playground, complete with a nearby park for kids. It's an ideal spot to enjoy a pastry or sandwich from one of the local bakeries, or a coffee from Strada Café.
Address: 49 Rue Monge, 75005 Paris
To be fair, Aux Merveilleux de Fred has multiple locations in Paris, but as they have a location on Rue Monge, it couldn’t be left out. Their specialty is meringues, but my favorite is the sweet bread with chocolate chips. It is melt in your mouth, food orgasm, delicious. Caution: there’s usually a line, but it’s worth the usually small wait.
